Following our success with our 'Growing the Valley' Local Food Big Lottery bid, we are pleased to welcome Simon Platten as a new Growing Projects Propagator! Simon will be starting in January 2011 and responsible for developing a range of new projects and initiatives focused around local food.
The 'Growing the Valley' project will encourage and support local people to grow their own food through a number of linked community allotments and orchards, community supported agriculture and composting schemes, working closely with local communities and project partners. Projects include a Community Composting scheme, several new Community Orchards, a Training Apiary for new beekeepers, and restoration of some walled gardens involving the local community.
Ryan Rodgers, a Director, said:
"We are delighted with the success in Local Food funding to support the Growing the Valley project. This funding will allow us to facilitate and deliver a range of food growing and composting initiatives over the next three years, working with a range of partners. The valley is well known for its market gardening heritage and these projects will start to rekindle production. This will bring the benefits of local seasonal produce to a range of local communities, from rural villages to urban Plymouth."
The project will also include the development of the website as a focal information point and provide each project involved with its own webpage and a programme of events. Commercial growers and supply chains will also benefit from the project, which will look to work with them in order to increase the availability and consumption of local food and produce.
Simon will be contactable by email here >> or by phone on01822 835030.
