Morwellham Market Garden

The market garden is a long terrace feature of about 30m long, retained by stone walls, which were originally used by the miners and their families at Morwellham Quay. Currently research is being carried out into the historic varieties (dating from 1850 onwards), which were cultivated in the allotments at Morwellham, and surrounding commercial market gardens in the Tamar Valley.

The research will be used to inform the re-establishment of the terraced garden plots, and interpret the market gardening history of the Tamar Valley, and be included as part of the overall visitor experience at Morwellham.

We will update you on the findings of this research early next year and the emerging proposals for this area.

It is anticipated that crops from the terraces could eventually be used to supply local catering facilities at Morwellham, as well as interpreting the market garden history of this area.
